Cole retired from the Superior Court bench in March 2021. He had been a Superior Court Judge since 2009, and before that had been a District Court Judge since 1994. Judge Cy Grant, the se nior resident Superior Court judge in the 6th District, said in remarks at the Thursday, March 30, unveiling ceremo ny that Cole was dedicated to giving back to the com munity. Grant said people from the area always spoke highly of Cole’s wisdom and fairness in the courtroom. Grant said he once heard from a man that Cole had saved his life. When he asked how he had done that, the man replied that Cole had sentenced him to prison. The man explained, ac cording to Grant, that going to prison had interrupted the life of crime and vio lence that he had been pur suing. Dressed in a leopard print outfit, Jazz strutted before the judges with her chin up and an excited bounce in her step. According to her owner, Jazz is no stranger to fine fashion. “She has a whole dress er filled with clothes,” said Edenton resident Sue Woodard. Woodard was among the roughly 50 residents attend ing Saturday’s festival with their canine companions. The event raised money for local animal shelters and the Perquimans-based AWARE, or Animal Welfare of the Albemarle Region Ev eryday Inc. July 22 event tevamp’ of former Music and Water Festival BY TYLER NEWMAN Staff Writer EDENTON — Edenton leaders have given their stamp of approval to a new waterfront festival tins summer, one that will bring music, food trucks and plenty of beer. The Tourism Develop ment Authority sought approval from Town Coun cil last week to sell beer in a public space during Sounds of Summer, sched uled the afternoon and evening of Saturday, July 22. The event will be a sort of “revamp” of the former Music and Water Festival, according to organizers Amber Hardy and Erienne Dickman. EDENTON — Nearly eight decades ago, a group of Edenton women came together to create an event unlike any other in the re gion to raise money for historic preservation and community projects. Seventy-five years lat er, the Edenton Woman’s Club’s Pilgrimage of His toric Homes is still going strong. And next weekend, the biennial event will be returning to the streets of the South’s prettiest small town. This year’s tour, sched ¬ Herringbone restaurant and the Roanoke River Lighthouse. Adjacent park ing lots will be closed for food trucks, including Ki- ia’s Way and Old Colony Smokehouse. The event will feature dancing fueled by beach music favorite The Band of Oz from 4 p.m. until about 7 p.m. or 8 p.m. Hardy and Dickman said Sounds of Summer will be free to the public. Attendees are encouraged to visit the waterfront in their boats or bring blan kets and chairs to sit out on the lawn. The Edenton Police Department will be on hand for the event.
